Below are the individuals who run the day-to-day operations of The Wave Program of Pacific Grove.

Co-Founder & Executive Director - Darryl C. Smith

Darryl C. Smith Darryl Smith enjoyed a 29 year professional career as a High School Physical Education Teacher, Athletic Director, Boys and Girls Basketball Coach (eight years), and College Women’s Basketball Coach (19 years). As a Collegiate Coach, Smith served as a Head Coach at all levels, NCAA Division I, II, III, and Junior College. He has over 300 victories and over a 60 percent winning percentage. His collegiate teams won 20 Games nine times, they won seven Conference Championships, and participated in seven NCAA post season Tournaments. Coach Smith was The Colorado Athletic Conference “Coach of the Year” Twice in 1991 and 1994, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference “Coach of the Year” 1997, Missouri Valley Athletic Conference “Coach of the Year” 2000, and Kansas State Coaches Association “Coach of the Year” 2000. Smith coached 10 "All Americans", * eight "Conference Players of the Year”, and over 60 "All Conference Players”. Smith's coaching stops include Cal State San Bernardino, Metro State College of Denver, Wichita State, University of Nevada, Reno, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and Butler Community College. Smith was inducted to the Metro State "Hall of Fame” in 2003. He still ranks in the top 20 all-time in Division II by wins and winning percentage. Smith was a standout Basketball Player himself at Leland High School, San Jose, CA, '76 and represented the South Squad in the California North-South All Star game. Smith went on to play at The College of Great Falls, Great Falls, MT, '81 where he graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education.

Executive Director of The Wave Program, Darryl Smith, sits in a golf cart after making the rounds during summer camp at PGHSFrom 1991 to 1994 Smith was the Executive Director for NYSP, (at Metro State College, Denver) the National Youth Sports Program. NYSP was foundation funded by the NCAA and served underprivileged youth in urban areas. Smith over saw the charity which provided a six week summer sports program on the campus of Metro State. NYSP of Metro State served over 600 underprivileged youth in the Denver area. It was Smiths' experience with NYSP that hatched the Wave Program of Pacific Grove. “ All of us at “thewaveprogram" look forward to providing the youth of Pacific Grove with an outstanding opportunity to develop a healthy appreciation for physical activity and artistic expression. The Wave will benefit our entire Pacific Grove Community."

Darryl Smith is a master motivator and is still sought after as a public speaker. Smith is known for teaching a message of the importance of intangible and tangible qualities, motivation and preparation, which are important building blocks for success at all levels.

Smith is married to Donna O'Donnell-Smith, a Physical Education teacher at PGHS. They have three children, Trevor Smith, a Computer Animator, Jessica Smith, a Verizon Executive, and Tatum Madrid, who is the Dance Coach at PGHS. They also have three grandchildren, Jamar, Strider, and Slade.

Activities Director - Nicole Sepagan

Nicole Sepagan Nicole Sepagan is in her first year as the Activities Director of thewaveprogram (TWP) of Pacific Grove. She is in charge of making the daily schedule for 300+ campers who attend TWP as well as overseeing the 12 group leaders and their volunteer workers. She is the fourth Activities Director of TWP since its inception in 2016. Sepagan follows the footsteps of Todd Buller (2017-2019), Jordan Gasperson (2021-2022) and Donna O'Donnell (2023).

Nicole has a B.S. degree in Kinesiology from California State University, Monterey Bay, and has dedicated her career to promoting health and wellness as a personal trainer. Over the past 20 years, she has amassed a wealth of experience in the recreation industry for the City of Monterey, honing her skills and knowledge to help individuals achieve their fitness goals.

Her journey has been fueled by a passion for physical health and a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those she works with.

Webmaster & Registration Coordinator

John Barker, Jr.John Barker, Jr., is from Colorado and has been in charge of website development for The Wave Program since it's inception in 2016. He is getting an opportunity to work again with his good friend and former colleague, Darryl Smith (Executive Director). Barker and Smith worked together in Kansas, at Wichita State University (WSU) from 1998-2004. Barker will be in charge of updating and expanding the website and also coordinating the online registration for The Wave Program.

John has put together several websites (using Joomla, a Content Management System) for well-known business in Pueblo such as the Runyon Field Sports Complex, St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Anne's Catholic Church, Pueblo Greater Sports Hall of Fame, Crowley County Heritage Center, Ordway Building Supply, Bessemer Irrigating Ditch Company and the St. Charles Mesa Water District to name a few.

Barker, who holds two college degrees (B.A. in Business Administration - Western State College of Colorado, Gunnison, CO, and M.S. in Sports Management, Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL) learned web design, HTML and CSS on his own from working 11 years in college athletic media relations (sports information).

Born in Denver and a native of Pueblo, CO for most of his life, Barker has worked in several athletic departments throughout the country: University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA), The College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, VA),  Fort Hays State University (Hays, KS), the University of Southern Colorado (now CSU-Pueblo), and WSU.

Barker, who is single, enjoys spending time with his parents, siblings and their families. In August 2014, Barker underwent a cochlear implant on his right ear and has regained some of the hearing he has lost since birth.

What is the WAVE Program?

The Wave Program is a two-week summer day camp for girls and boys going into 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade. We aim to provide an active, healthy, positive camp environment that sparks interest in team and individual sports and the arts electives offered at Pacific Grove High School.
