WAVE WRITERS Program Commentary

By Caroline Coen
Special to the Cedar Street Times - July 31, 2020

The week of July 20th-24th, twenty-eight rising PGUSD fourth grade students participated online in the first ever session of the Wave Writers Program. Throughout the week, Wave Writers participants explored various forms of creative writing, from poetry to memoirs to short stories.

Wave Writers instructors Oscar Scholin, Claire Roggeman, William Coen, and Caroline Coen delighted in watching the students blossom over the course of the week. “Initially, everyone in my group — myself included — was a bit shy, but by the end of the camp, we were all cracking jokes and sharing our work in a relaxed and supportive environment built on a true sense of community and student pride in their work. I am so privileged to have shared in this experience with the kids, and though I only had the honor of learning but an ounce of each of them and their potential, I was blown away but what I saw: my students’ creativity, intelligence, and humor were absolutely astonishing,” says Oscar Scholin.

Claire Roggeman felt proud that “Even in a unique situation, the kids were able to produce outstanding pieces of writing.” According to William Coen, “Wave Writers was an exciting way to connect with the students and watch their writing improve."

The Wave Writers instructors are so proud of all the students’ hard work and creativity! Next summer, the program plans to run again, and the instructors hope it will be in person.

“The Wave Writers Program had a fantastic inaugural summer,” says The Wave Program Executive Director Darryl Smith. "The Wave Program Board is extremely pleased with the effort of PGHS students Caroline Coen (project supervisor) and instructors Oscar Scholin, Claire Roggeman, and Will Coen, along with the young writers who participated. The project achieves a major objective of The Wave Program, the interaction of high school students and elementary students from PGUSD. Congratulations to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing you next summer!”.

Here are a few comments we received about the Wave Writer's Program:

I am so very grateful for the engaging and enriching experience my son had as a Wave Writers participant this summer! The instructors provided such well organized activities and a creative environment for the students. What a special opportunity for older elementary students to work with high school students on their writing skills in a small group setting. My student was so very excited for class to begin each day!

The group leaders did an outstanding job of motivating the kids and making the writing experience engaging and fun! We feel so lucky that our daughter was able to be part of the Wave Writers camp this summer, thank you so much for offering it!

I highly recommend this program. My daughter tends to dislikes distance learning and fought doing this program- but was totally on board with in the first five minutes of the first class. She looked forward to it, learned from it and left each class saying how much she enjoyed it. Thank you so much!
